Bar Height & Brake Controls
Once your suspension, seat and foot placement are set to a good starting point, the next step is to look at how your body is positioned over the bike. Small setup changes can have a huge effect on how balanced, stable and confident you feel, especially when climbing, cornering, braking or riding technical terrain.
Bar Height (Stem Stack)
Bar height is one of the most influential setup adjustments you can make on a mountain bike. Even moving the handlebars by 5–10 mm can noticeably change how the bike steers, how much grip you feel through the front tyre, and ultimately how much confidence you have on the trail.
Lower vs Higher Bars
"In general", a lower bar position increases front tyre grip by making a lower, more stable riding platform.
A lower handlebars will feel less "tippy" and create less leverage acting over the tyres. This means that as you move your body forward—whether braking, cornering or simply leaning into the bike—the pressure builds more gradually rather than suddenly.
The result is a much wider window of adjustment.
Instead of the front tyre feeling like it suddenly goes from having too little grip to too much pressure, you can progressively load it, making the bike feel calmer, more predictable and easier to control.
A higher bar position creates the opposite effect.
It places you in a more upright, open stance, which many riders enjoy, particularly when riding large rocks, steps or rough terrain. However, because your centre of mass is higher is acting over a higher platform, you have a less stable platform and small body movements now create much larger changes in pressure, making the front tyre feel more sensitive and reducing the margin for error.
Neither position is inherently right or wrong—they simply have different characteristics.
"I Already Feel Like I'm Falling Onto the Bars"
This is probably the most common objection I hear when suggesting riders lower their handlebars and occasionally the bars really are too low.
But far more often, the issue isn't that the rider is too low or too far forward. It's that they are standing on an unstable platform while carrying too much height above the bike.
When your feet are up on your tippee toes AND your centre of mass is very high, even a small impact from a rock, a braking force, or a slight lean forward creates a sudden increase in pressure through the front tyre.
The rider experiences this as the front wheel "digging in" or feeling like they're being pitched over the handlebars.
Ironically, raising the bars often makes this worse, not better.
For many riders, this completely changes how the bike feels.
Rider Weight Matters
Bar height is not determined by height alone.
Two riders of exactly the same height may require completely different setups simply because they weigh different amounts.
A heavier rider naturally places more load through the tyres and often has little difficulty generating grip. They can usually ride a slightly higher front end while still maintaining excellent traction.
A lighter rider has less natural load available and often struggles to generate enough pressure at the front tyre, particularly in corners.
For these riders, lowering the handlebars can produce a surprisingly large improvement in grip and confidence.
I've seen this adjustment transform the feel of a bike for many smaller or lighter riders. Rather than feeling like they're perched on top of the bike, they suddenly feel connected to it, allowing the bike to corner more naturally and predictably.
Rider Preference
Setup is not just about physics—it is also about how you like the bike to feel.
Some riders enjoy operating close to the limit of traction and often prefer a slightly higher front end.
Others value grip, stability and predictability above everything else. They want the front tyre to feel planted before they begin increasing speed.
Neither approach is right or wrong.
Over 20+ years of coaching, I've noticed that many women naturally fall into the second category. They often prefer a bike that feels connected and trustworthy before pushing their speed. Many men, by comparison, are happy to tolerate a little less grip if it gives them a more open feeling through rough terrain. There are plenty of exceptions, but recognising where you sit on that spectrum can help you choose a setup that suits your riding style rather than someone else's.
Finding Your Ideal Bar Height
The best setup is rarely found by guessing, instead, experiment.
Take a multitool with you out on the trail and choose a familiar section of trail and then deliberately try out different bar positions. Notice how the steering feels, how easily you can load the front tyre, and whether the bike feels more connected beneath you.
Gradually raise or lower the bars, testing the same section each time.
You're looking for a position where:
• the front tyre feels connected and predictable
• you feel supported by the handlebars rather than falling onto them
• the bike feels stable through corners and under braking
• you can move your weight forwards confidently without the front tyre suddenly becoming overloaded.
When you find that point, the improvement is usually immediate. The bike feels calmer, more manoeuvrable and easier to trust and when you trust the front tyre, everything else becomes easier.
Adjusting the Bar Height
If you are unsure, ask a mechanic to help you experiment with stem spacers. On some bikes, especially e-bikes or bikes with internal cable routing through the stem, this adjustment may be more complicated and is best done by a bike shop.
Bar height is also only one part of grip and confidence. Tyre pressure, suspension sag and body position all matter as well. If you are struggling for traction, check that your tyre pressures are not too high and that your suspension is not set too firm.
Bar Roll
Bar roll affects how comfortable and supported your hands feel on the grips.
If the bars are rolled too far back, your wrists may collapse and your body may feel like it is being tipped backward. If the bars are rolled too far forward, your wrists may feel strained or overextended.
The goal is to find a position where your hands can rest naturally on the grips, your wrists feel comfortable, and you can lean into the handlebars without feeling like your hands are slipping or collapsing.
Brakes: One-Finger Braking
Modern mountain bike brakes are powerful enough that most riders only need one finger to control them.
Many riders still use two fingers because they feel they need more strength or control. In reality, this is often caused by brake lever position, hand position, habit, or body position rather than a lack of strength.
One-finger braking is useful because it allows your index finger to control the brake while your other fingers remain wrapped around the handlebar. This gives you more grip, stability and control over the bike.
Your index finger is also highly sensitive, which makes it ideal for controlling braking pressure. Braking is not just about pulling hard; it is about applying pressure smoothly and accurately.
To make one-finger braking work well, the brake levers need to suit your hands. Your index finger should be able to reach the lever comfortably, and the lever should sit far enough inboard on the handlebar that your finger naturally rests near the end of the lever, where you have the most control and leverage.
Lever angle also matters. If the levers point too far downward, your hands may slide forward when braking. If they point too far upward, your wrists may become awkward or kinked. As a general guide, the lever angle should follow the natural line of your arms when you are in your braking position.
When everything is set correctly, you should be able to brake confidently with one finger while keeping a strong, relaxed grip on the handlebar with the rest of your hand.
A final note: brake levers are expensive and vulnerable in crashes. Many riders prefer to leave them just loose enough that they can rotate slightly around the bar in an impact rather than snapping or bending. They should still feel secure while riding, but not so tight that they cannot move at all if hit.
The Goal
The goal of bike setup is not to copy someone else’s position. It is to create a bike that allows your body to work efficiently.
Your setup should help you feel balanced, connected and confident. You should be able to pedal efficiently, steer accurately, brake with control, and generate grip without fighting the bike.
Small adjustments can make a huge difference. Take the time to experiment, pay attention to what changes, and build a setup that supports the way you want to ride.
